Resurrection Cookies To be made the Saturday night before Easter Sunday Preheat oven 300° Ingredients: 1 cup whole pecans or hickory nuts 1 cup sugar pinch of salt 3 egg whites 1 teaspoon vinegar 1. Place nuts in a zipper bag and let children pound them with a wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, the Roman soldiers were cruel and they hurt Jesus. 2. Let the children smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, he was only given sour vinegar to drink. 3. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. 4. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers who were sad to see him suffer. 5. Add 1 cup of sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us and He gave us the gift of life. 6. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 11-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the clearness in God’s eyes of those who see the wonderful things that Jesus did for us. 7. Fold in the broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper or parchment paper. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus was buried. 8. Put the cookie sheet into the oven. Close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. 9. On Resurrection morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie! The cookies are hollow! On the first Resurrection Day, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Thank you for being my Savior, Jesus. Let this day remind me to praise you, always!
